How Much Do Twitch Ads Pay? Ad Revenue Per Viewer, Explained
Ads are the Twitch income stream people ask about most and earn from least. Here is what one ad is actually worth, a table by average viewers, and the setting that decides which revenue split you get.
The short answer
Twitch streamers usually earn about $1.50 to $6 per 1,000 ad impressions. An impression is one ad shown to one viewer. So a 30-second ad played to 100 viewers pays roughly $0.15 to $0.60, and a full three-minute break (six 30-second ads) to the same 100 viewers pays roughly $0.90 to $3.60.
That is why ads rarely pay the bills on Twitch. For most streamers, subs and Bits bring in far more.
Twitch ad earnings by average viewers
This table assumes 60 hours of streaming a month and three minutes of ads every hour, which is six 30-second ads per hour. It also assumes every viewer sees every ad, so treat it as a ceiling.
| Avg viewers | Impressions / month | Low ($1.50) | Typical ($3.50) | High ($6) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 3,600 | $5 | $13 | $22 |
| 50 | 18,000 | $27 | $63 | $108 |
| 100 | 36,000 | $54 | $126 | $216 |
| 500 | 180,000 | $270 | $630 | $1,080 |
| 1,000 | 360,000 | $540 | $1,260 | $2,160 |
The maths is simple: average viewers × hours streamed × ads per hour gives impressions. Divide by 1,000 and multiply by your rate. Swap in your own numbers in the Twitch money calculator.
How the Twitch ad split works
Twitch used to pay a fixed amount per 1,000 impressions. It now pays a percentage instead: 55% of the revenue from each ad that runs on your stream.
- Affiliates get the 55% split by setting Ads Manager to at least three minutes of ads per hour.
- Partners can also be offered the Ads Incentive Program, which pays a set amount each month for streaming a set number of hours at a set ad density. Twitch says you will not earn less through it than you would have outside it.
Twitch changes these terms from time to time, so check the current offer in your Creator Dashboard under Ads Manager.
Why your real ad money is lower
Not every viewer sees the ad
Subscribers on channels that include ad-free viewing, Turbo members and people running ad blockers all count as viewers but earn you nothing from ads. On some channels that is a big slice of the audience.
Audience country
Advertisers pay much more to reach viewers in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. A channel with a mostly international audience will sit near the bottom of the range.
Time of year
Ad rates rise in the run-up to the holidays and drop in January. The same stream can earn noticeably more per ad in November than in February.
How many ads should you run?
Three minutes an hour is the sensible default. It unlocks the better split, and running scheduled ad breaks can also switch off pre-roll ads for a while, so new viewers land straight in your stream instead of an ad.
Going past that adds little money and costs goodwill. Announce breaks, run them during natural pauses like queue times or bathroom breaks, and never cut away mid-moment.
Where Twitch money really comes from
For a typical channel, ads are the smallest of the three income streams. A single Tier 1 sub is worth about $2.50 to the streamer, which is roughly what 700 ad impressions pay at a typical rate. Our guide on what a Twitch sub is worth breaks that down, and Bits add $0.01 each on top. Treat ads as a bonus and put your effort into reasons to subscribe.
